United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue visited Hinton Mills today in May’s Lick as part of his “Back to Our Roots” RV tour. The tour, which spanned from Tuesday through Friday, included stops in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky.

Secretary Perdue visited with area farmers, agribusiness owners and decision makers over lunch, then participated in a Q&A session led by David Beck, executive vice president of Kentucky Farm Bureau and Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles.

“For government to work, we’ve got to communicate,” Secretary Perdue told the audience. “That’s why I’m here.”

Secretary Perdue fielded questions ranging from the impact of the recent tariffs imposed by China, to the impact of the margin protection program on dairy producers, to improving school lunches.

“It was an honor to host the top official in U.S. Agriculture here at May’s Lick Mill,” said Adam Hinton, vice president of Hinton Mills. “We are so proud to showcase agriculture in our area because we know the farmers and agribusinesses here are among the best of the best.”

From May’s Lick Mill, Secretary Purdue continued on to Morehead for a tour of Harold White Lumber Company. While in Kentucky, he will also visit farmer and veteran Danny Townsend in Jeffersonville, tour Montgomery County High School’s agriculture department and stop by Keeneland.

Sonny Perdue has been the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture since March 2017, and previously served as the Governor of Georgia.
