More than 40 car club enthusiasts cruised along Kentucky’s backroads for a nostalgic and scenic day trip.

The Somernites Covered Bridge Cruise group, an automobile club from Somerset, Ky., began their adventure at the Somerset Mall last Thursday morning.

After stopping for lunch at Blue Licks State Park, cruisers wound their way into Fleming County where they drove their classic vehicles through the Goddard Covered Bridge and were greeted by members of the tourism committee.

The weather was perfect, the cars were gorgeous, and the tourists were so friendly”, Crystal Ruark, tourism committee member, said. “We look forward to having the group back on Oct. 25 for their fall tour”, she added.

In addition to the Goddard, Ringo’s Mill and Grange City bridges the car club also made stops at the Colville and Johnson Creek covered bridges.

Angella Wise Watson enjoyed the trip in her classic red, Chevy Nova convertible and made a few discoveries along the way.

“I 'm so glad Somernites Cruise did this cruise. I've always loved covered bridges, they are a dying part of our history. There are a few more than these still left in the state, but they are disappearing. Everyone should check them out before they are gone for good. A special thanks to those working diligently to preserve this part of our history. It's easy to see why the Goddard Bridge is one of the most photographed covered bridges in the whole country. The setting is perfect, and the bridge is certainly cared for”, Angella said.

If you missed the Spring Covered Bridge Cruise, there will be another chance to see those classic automobiles cruise through Fleming county again during the fall tour on Oct. 25, 2018.
