From 1913 to 1963 the brick schoolhouse that once sat at the top of the hill on Tunnel Hill road has seen thousands of children enter its doors,
To this day, the Sharpsburg school has held a special place in the hearts of those bright minds.
On Sunday, June 11, the class of 1957 hosted a reunion in the schools renovated gymnasium with more than 200 former students in attendance.
It’s been 60 years since the graduating class of ‘57 received their diplomas and since there are only 13 classmates that are still living they decided that they would invite all the students who had attended their beloved school.
While some drove from miles away or surrounding counties to spend the day with their “old friends,” others still live nearby and walked to their old school.
Some of those classmates said they hadn’t seen their friends for 50 or 60 years and were delighted to see each other again.
Robert “Bobby Joe” Toy decided to take an 11-day road trip from his home in California to end up at his uncle John Dunaway’s in Sharpsburg so he could attend the reunion.
John is also a former Sharpsburg student, who along with his classmate Thelma June Hunt Gulley, are the only surviving members of their class.
Several photographs and yearbooks were on display for everyone to enjoy and made for a nostalgic walk down memory lane.
Frank Hart had brought several pictures to share and enjoyed being able to name several of the faces from his school days.
Nancye Wells Maze, said, “I really enjoyed seeing lots of people I haven’t seen in years and I had a wonderful time.”
Lee Lyons echoed the same sentiment, and said, “It was so much fun we really need to do this again sometime.”
Owen Ellis and his wife Cheryl, also had a great time as they visited with friends Owen had not seen in over 50 years.
Ronnie Atkinson and his wife flew in from Colorado to catch up with his graduating class as well as friends from his hometown.
With tables laden with an array of delicious foods, and a sea of people, the walls of the Sharpsburg gym, once again captured the voices of students as they reminisced about their school days.
