Iconic New Years Celebration set to take place in Maysville

David Green and Melissa Greenwell stop by Fleming County Radio Station WFLE to talk about the Peoples Bank 2017 New Years Celebration that will take place in the US Bank Parking lot on the McDonald Parkway.

Plans to ring in the new year in a big way is set to take place in Maysville Kentucky.

This year the city will mark the passage of time complete with live music, a traditional ball drop and fireworks.

The event will be held on McDonald Parkway in the US Bank Parking Lot and is free for the public to attend.

As part of the festivities, vendors will be on hand to offer a variety of foods and the Maysville Younger Women’s Club will serve hot chocolate and coffee to help keep you warm.

Plans for such a spectacular evening came about after Melissa Greenwell, with Womens’ Crisis Center and David Green, from Comprehend, Inc., discussed fund-raising projects.

“David Green and I were working on another project together and began discussing the difficulties of fund-raising for non-profits. We began talking about how we would love to do something different for the community, while still raising money for our organizations. David discussed how he had been to Time Square for their ball drop and how he would love to have that here. We began sharing ideas of what our dreams would be and finally just said, lets do it. From there, we went to the Maysville City Commissioners and got permission to use their property and to extend the noise ordinance time to midnight. We sought directions from the director of tourism, Suzie Pratt. And then we began to get financial support from the community to make it happen. It has truly been an event that the community has made happen,” Greenwell explained.

The celebration will kick off with music provided by a Deejay at 6 p.m.

City Heat will take center stage at 8 p.m. to rock you through the night with some soulful sounds from the 1970s through the 1990s.

In those final seconds as the old year fades away, a lighted ball will descend from an 80 foot crane as revelers join in the countdown to witness one of the worlds most iconic moments to welcome the New Year.

To add even more excitement to the camaraderie, a fireworks display will follow the ball drop.

The Peoples Bank New Year Celebration is a joint fundraiser between the Women’s Crisis Center and Comprehend, Inc.

“We are excited to bring a bit of Time Square to Maysville. We are hopeful that we will draw in populations of people that would not normally attend one of our events. The partnership between WCC and Comprehend has been amazing and we hope to make it an annual event,” said Greenwell.
