Market Street Discount reopens in Carlisle
It hasn’t been easy for Bill Kelley. He opened his Market Street Discount Hardware at 104 Market Street, Carlisle in 2000. He was doing pretty good, selling goods out of two buildings until one burned down March 3, 2006. He consolidated into the current building and reopened Nov. 6, 2006, and was coming back until the recession hit in 2008. His health also took a turn for the worse and in 2011 he underwent a kidney transplant and has had a couple of heart attacks since. Nothing seems to keep him down.
After being closed for three months this summer dealing with health issues, he and wife Melody decided to open again. “I needed to get back in the saddle,” Billy said. “If I’m going to sit around I’d much rather do it here than at home.”
They’ve put up the old sign to let the community know they are back and still offering tools, toys, gifts, figurines and collectibles, flower and garden supplies, store pipe and supplies, nuts and bolts, nails and screws, lumber, pain and supplies. They also have a plumbing and electrical section and electric heaters. Wood stoves used to be a big seller and they are hoping to get more of those back in soon. They still have a lot of stove piping for wood stoves in stock though.
Big news for Carlisle and Nicholas County is that Market Street discount is also carrying lumber. If you need a few 2x4’s, 2x6’s, 2x8’s or 2x10’s they’ve got them. As sales pick up Billy plans to add to his inventory.
Besides the normal hardware offerings they also have used appliances and used furniture for sale, as well as some used clothing. As a matter of fact, you never know what you’ll find at the store, like a lamp or guitar or other instrument.
The store will be open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. Folks are invited to call ahead to see if they have the tool or items you are looking for. The number to the store is 859-405-5986.
