Nicholas Cattleman Association host field day

Nicholas County Cattleman’s Association hosted its second annual Summer Field Day Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Rich Storm’s Round-Up Ready Alfalfa fields in North Middletown.

Dr. Ray Smith, UK professor and forage specialist, spoke about Round-Up Ready Alfalfa technology. Alfalfa is great forage for livestock and this strain has been in use for the past 4-5 years but is becoming better known and used more often to help produce higher quality alfalfa crops with fewer weeds. It is also very popular with the thoroughbred horse industry.

New fly control options for beef cattle were discussed and attendees had a chance to try a “vetgun” that shoots highly concentrated bug control on cattle which aids in keeping flies away that carry diseases like pink eye.

Phillip and Michelle McDonald prepared a catered meal of rib eye sandwiches, hot dogs, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, salad and cookies. Rich Storm provided the drinks and the extension office provided paper products.

A silent auction with items donated by various businesses and individuals helped earn money for a new scholarship fund that the Nicholas County Cattleman’s Association is organizing.

“We’re a young chapter but growing and we have a great board led by president Pete Szak who has some great things planned for the year ahead. I’m proud and excited about the direction the chapter is growing,” extension agent Clay Stamm said.

To become a member of the Cattlemen’s Association stop by the Nicholas County Extension Office at 368 East Main Street, Carlisle and speak with extension agent Clay Stamm or call 859-289-2312.
