Cake lovers learn decorating skills

One of the most anticipated demonstrations to be held at the Fleming County Public Library this year has been a cake decorating class.

Jackie Thacker held her first class back in February with over 25 students in attendance and had a waiting list for future classes.

This past Tuesday the class was filled again and since it has been so popular there will be other classes scheduled sometime in the future.

As the class got underway, Jackie introduced herself and talked about how she got started decorating cakes.

“When I was in high school I took a foods class with Mrs. Willa Porter, Mrs. Porter is my hero, she had the patience of Job and she is the one who instilled my love for decorating cakes and I have been decorating cakes ever since then”, Jackie said.”Tonight we are going to learn some different techniques to dress up your cakes for special occasions, or to just surprise someone with a cake and say here is a cake I decorated for you,” she said.

Jackie teaches elementary school in Nicholas County and said she has also taught her students how to decorate cakes.

“My sixth grade students have worked with icing and fondant to decorate cakes in their enrichment class and at the end of the five week course we have a cake war. The boys have just as much fun as the girls and can get very competitive. So I think you will all enjoy what you learn tonight,” Jackie said.

After Jackie went over the list supply she then demonstrated how to fill the pastry bag and to create a base coat of frosting and how to make swirls to decorate the sides of a cake.

Before they began to decorate their own cakes each student spent about half an hour to practice making stars, rosettes and writing techniques.

After their practice session those in attendance decorated their own cakes to take home to share with their family.

On April 28, Jackie will teach a class on working with fondant.
